Revisiting the 90s—On My Own Terms

There’s something in the air right now—a return to 90s fashion style modern, seen through a more personal and intentional lens. Maybe it’s the recent wave of limited series, i.e. Love Story, and cultural nostalgia, or maybe it’s just the natural rhythm of fashion circling back.

For me, this moment isn’t about recreating anyone else’s story, but revisiting my own relationship with the era.

To remember what I loved.
What I wore.
And how I was learning to express myself in the middle of everything else life was asking of me.

90s Fashion Style Modern: Then and Now

In the 90s, I was in engineering school—deep in problem sets, lab work, and long days that didn’t leave much room for anything extra. And yet, style still found its way in.

I had a ribbed knit dress—brown and white striped—that I absolutely cherished. I would wear it with high-heeled clogs (also in brown), confidently making my way across campus, probably a bit more unsteady than I realized at the time.

Other days, practicality won out. I’d be in overalls and construction boots, drying soil samples in a microwave for my ECI 171 Soil Mechanics lab.

Looking back, it was a balance—between function and self-expression, between discipline and creativity. I didn’t have the language for it then, but I was already learning how to dress for myself.

Now: A Return to What Felt Right

Recently, I’ve found myself drawn back to 90s fashion style modern, but in a quieter, more refined way.

I pulled out my vintage Calvin Klein jeans.
I leaned back into brown—rich, grounding, and somehow more relevant than ever.

And during the recent Quince insider sale, I picked up a piece that felt instantly familiar.

The simplicity of a ribbed knit dress—clean lines, soft structure—feels timeless. It’s the kind of piece that doesn’t try too hard, which is exactly the point.

What drew me to this dress is the cotton-cashmere rib knit—it strikes that rare balance of softness and structure. It’s technically body-con, but in a way that feels supportive rather than exposing. It gently smooths through the midsection while still honoring your natural shape, which makes it feel thoughtful, elevated, and very wearable.

The 90s, Reinterpreted

What’s interesting now is how many brands are revisiting the same era—each in their own way. This softer approach to 90s fashion reflects a broader shift toward intentional dressing and timeless silhouettes.

Accessories were where I had the most fun interpreting the 90s through a modern lens. I kept it minimal with a thin leather headband—an easy nod to the decade without feeling costume-y—and paired it with an east-west shoulder bag from Quince, similar linked here, which feels both current and quietly nostalgic.

To balance the proportions of a maxi dress on my petite frame, I opted for pointed-toe mules to visually lengthen the silhouette. And for a more directional touch, I styled an oversized scarf as a belt by folding it into a triangle—an unexpected detail that brought a bit of structure and personality to the look, and taps into the trend of this present moment.

There’s a throughline here: not replication, but reinterpretation.

A playful take on the current scarf trend—this is one of my favorite scarf styling ideas: tying an oversized scarf as a belt by folding it into a triangle. This piece is from House of Aama’s Black History Month collection, adding meaning along with structure to the look.

If You’re Exploring This Era Too

If you’re feeling drawn to the 90s again, I’d suggest starting somewhere personal.

Not with a trend report.
Not with a checklist.

But with a question:
What did you love back then—and why?

For me, it was simplicity. Structure. A sense of ease that felt quietly confident.

Final Thoughts

Revisiting the 90s has been less about nostalgia and more about clarity.

It’s helped me reconnect with what felt natural to me—before trends, before expectations, before everything became so fast.

And maybe that’s the real takeaway:
Not to recreate the past, but to remember what felt like your own.

What About You?

Revisiting the 90s has been unexpectedly personal for me.

If you lived through it, I’d love to know what you remember wearing – or what you’d never wear again.

And if you’re seeing it for the first time, what’s catching your eye?
