Earth Month is in full swing and fashion is no exception. This month is when fashion labels put their best sustainable foot forward to show they are doing their part to save the planet. This includes second hand retailers as well.

I’m highlighting Earth Month with The Real Real which is an online luxury consignment site committed to a more sustainable fashion industry where luxury goods stay in circulation.

In this post I’m sharing the great things that TRR is doing to offset fashion’s problematic footprint.

“If you’re more of a visual person, be sure to check out my IGTV video of my TRR closet featuring items I’ve scored on the site since becoming a customer (watch in Instagram TV)

Last year I featured The Real Real  (TRR) on National Consignment Day and their #neverthrowaway campaign. Since that time the online consignment site has made strides in sustainability including teaming up with Stella McCartney, a pioneer in sustainable fashion.

When you consign any Stella McCartney item you will earn a $100 site credit (sign up here)

Additionally consignors on TRR can view their Environmental Savings in terms of Liters of Water and Driving Miles saved. Their “sustainability calculator” includes an industry standard 30% displacement rate that asserts that for every purchase of a consigned item, 1/3 of that item is not newly produced.

“329 Million Liters of Water Saved since 2012 and 87 Million Driving Miles saved – enough energy and greenhouse gasses to equal 31,000 trips from their LA store to their Soho flagship”

Below are my picks from TRR with a mix of luxe as well as affordable spring essentials in the current trend of neutral and monochrome hues. These won’t last long though so click through to Buy Well!

For my part I have saved 279 Liters of Water and 11 driving miles by consigning just 4 items. Clearly I do my share to support the circular economy by “buying” more than selling on TRR! But should I ever tire of those purchases I can always resell them on TRR.

One of the keys for successful conscious consumerism is to “buy well”. High quality second hand items that maintain their value have a much better chance of a) staying in your closet or b)finding a new home instead of ending up in landfill.
