ON TREND: Asymmetrical Frayed Hems

This season’s denim trend, the asymmetrical frayed hems (or mullet) are big with the streetstyle stars. Rather than run out to the shops, I took a more conservative route by doing a DIY version.

In addition to my philosophy of investing in just one trend item per season I also follow the rule of thumb of selecting a trend with an element of interest which sets my look apart. Following this approach prevents me from getting caught up in the vicious trend cycle.

Anything with the word “mullet” definitely ticks the “interesting” box (sometimes with frightening results). However I took the risk because I’m a sucker for a fun DIY project with immediate return; this one costs nothing if converting a pair of jeans that you already own. I chose to double down by using a pair of vintage Levi’s, another season favorite.

Below the images of the finished product, I’ve provided a step by step process to convert a pair of thrifted Levis 550 boot cut jeans into a pair of cropped flared and frayed denim goodness.

As you will see this mullet “business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back” asymmetrical frayed hems are all party!

Step 1: Decide on the length and pin the hem under and try on to make sure you are satisfied with the length. (This is where the old adage of measure twice cut once is key). To achieve an asymmetrical look, pin the front hem 1-1/2 to 2 inches higher than the back.

Step 2: Next use a straight edge and scissors to cut off the front hem (along the inner an outer seam) and the back hem.

Step 3: Begin the fraying process by gathering one of the lighter strands which run in the horizontal direction. Repeat this process on the front and back hems until you have created frayed hems of about 3/4 to 1 inches wide.

Step 5: Pair with a statement shoe and a simple white tee to keep the focus on the frayed hems handiwork.
